Children of the Salt Road

By Lydia Fazio Theys

Mark and Catherine want to escape to the country after weathering turmoil in their lives. The author has purposely left the nature of the unpleasantness vague, creating a mystical quality to the ensuing story. They have arrived at their rental cottage in Macri located in a beautiful coastal town in Sicily. Catherine plans to set up an art studio in the old barn, while Mark will be helping landowners of small farms set themselves up to host visitors during holidays. Catherine becomes unsettled by a mysterious boy who appears out of nowhere and disappears just as quickly. Mark seriously doubts the boy exists, and this begins to erode their marriage.

As the story progresses, the subject turns decidedly morose and morbid but is offset by the lush descriptions of the peacefulness and beauty of the location, which has an interesting and unusual paradoxical effect. You will find yourself devouring the pages in suspense to gain the clarity that the end of the book reveals, along with a surprise that you will not see coming! It will leave you pondering the book’s deeper meaning.

Kindle in Motion

If you like reading books on an e-reader, Children of the Salt Road is one of a few hundred books currently available in the Kindle in Motion format. The book includes art, animations, and videos that can be viewed on certain Fire tablets and the Kindle app for iOS and Android. You can switch the features on and off, depending on your preferences, but it’s a fun way to immerse yourself a little more in the story and view an artist’s interpretations of the setting and writing.
