Every May, Antrim County, Michigan, hosts families and enthusiasts to celebrate a natural marvel—the Petoskey stone.

This annual event takes place near the scenic shores of Lake Michigan in Barnes Park campground in Eastport, Michigan.

The Petoskey stone, a fossilized coral unique to Michigan, can be found everywhere in the state, but most easily along the shores of Lake Michigan. The festival is a tribute to this geological wonder and to the many rock hunters that bring their wares for education, along with artisans that make everything out of this beautiful stone.

Last year’s event was a rainy one, but it did not deter the hearty Michiganders from seeing all the creations the artisans have to share: a treasure trove of handmade goods, including Petoskey stone-inspired art and souvenirs. There is everything from jewelry, sculptures, and picture frames, to birdhouses, planters, fabric creations, and paintings depicting the recognizable hexagon beauty.

Recreational geologists are on hand to enthusiastically share Michigan’s geologic history and are happy to deepen your appreciation for the Petoskey stone. They are also passionate about the many other fossils and rocks that can be found in Michigan.

The Petoskey Stone Festival offers an array of activities that cater to both children and adults. Alongside the artisans is an assortment of yummy food trucks and lots of entertainment, such as live music, fire juggling and magic, trout fishing, a petting zoo, and a raptor rescue educator.

The Petoskey Stone Festival is more than just a celebration of a unique geological find. It is a celebration of community, creativity, and the wonders of the natural world.
